Canada Sets Gold Medal Record

The Olympic Games were Canada’s time to shine.  I would like to congratulate the Canadian athletes, coaches, volunteers and organizers who contributed to making the 2010 Olympic Winter Games held in Vancouver and Whistler a tremendous success.

As Minister of Public Safety, I would also like to congratulate the RCMP and the Integrated Security Unit, who together with other law-enforcement partners provided a safe and secure environment for athletes, visitors and Canadians.

Canada’s Winter Olympic athletes amazed us with their skill and courage and showed the world the strength of Canadian athletics. By winning 26 total medals — 14 gold, 7 silver, and 5 bronze — Canada placed third in the medal count at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, placed first in number of gold medals and set a record for the most medals ever won by Canadian athletes at an Olympic Winter Games and most gold medals ever won by a Winter Games host.

In fact Canada’s Olympians set the new standard of excellence, the only nation to win 14 gold medals in a Winter Games

As the world looked on, our entire national Olympic team provided us with some of the most exciting moments in Canadian sporting history.

Although I was unable to see any of the games in person, I did have the opportunity to travel to Vancouver during the Olympics to discuss security issues with my US counterpart, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano. While in Vancouver, I also visited the security command centres and saw first-hand the work being done to ensure the focus remained on showcasing our country and our athletes to the world.

The Games produced lasting memories that will endure for years to come. We remember especially those Canadian athletes who overcame profound personal loss to fight their way on to the podium.

The commitment, dedication, spirit and success of our athletes inspired the nation and will undoubtedly motivate young Canadians to follow in their footsteps.

I join with all Canadians in expressing our pride and admiration for our athletes and look forward to cheering on our Paralympic athletes as they too go for gold on home soil.
