Safer products mean safer families
Earlier this month, our government delivered on its commitment to help protect Canadian families from unsafe products with the Canadian Consumer Products Safety Act.
Canada’s current product safety laws are out-of-date and leave our families vulnerable to dangerous or unsafe products being on store shelves. By introducing the Canada Consumer Safety Act, we will bring our product safety laws up to speed with the realities of the global marketplace.
This Act contains tough provisions that are necessary to help prevent unsafe products from getting into our homes and into the hands of our children. This includes giving the Government the power to recall unsafe products and to ensure industry keeps effective records so we are able to track where they’ve sent unsafe products more quickly. Currently, the Government of Canada cannot force uncooperative companies to recall unsafe products.
Our government has listened to the concerns of consumers and parents alike. They needed to be confident that the products they buy will be safe for them and their families. It has been estimated that approximately one-third of Canadians have, at least once, bought products and found they were unsafe. Our government has proposed a solution that has the strong support of major Canadian children’s organizations, consumer advocacy groups and other key stakeholders who share the conviction that Canadians need better protection from unsafe consumer products.
