On Parliament Hill

Promising Job Numbers

When Prime Minister Stephen Harper hosted the leaders of the strongest economies on the planet last month our government was singled out many times by the other participants as an example of good fiscal management.

The economic data justifying that praise is now being made public by Statistics Canada which recently reported that 93,000 net new jobs were created in June.  That number is three times the number many economists expected, and the second largest monthly employment gain ever.

Our nation’s continued job creation is further evidence Canada’s Economic Action Plan is working. This is good news for our government, as it shows we are on the right path to economic recovery. However, it is even better news to Canadians who have recently returned to work or who are hopeful their turn will come soon.

The increase in employment lowers Canada’s unemployment rate to 7.9 percent and down signifcantly from the March jobless rate which stood at 8.2 percent.

‪‪June’s job growth represents the sixth straight month of job gains.  In fact, over the past year Canada has created more than 400,000 new jobs.‪‪

This week, the International Monetary Fund again predicted that Canada’s economic growth will be at the head of the pack among the G-7 this year and next year. It is little wonder the BBC recently declared “in this economy, we all want to be Canadian.”‪‪

While it is certainly encouraging to see Canada’s economy on the right track, there are still many economic factors that are beyond our control. The world economy continues to struggle to find its footing and so we are very wary of the fact that the global recovery remains fragile at best.

As the country with the best fiscal position in the G-7, our government’s plan is to focus on jobs and growth. By comparison, the Opposition’s plan would raise taxes, halt our recovery, and, according to experts, kill almost 400,000 jobs.

For our government ensuring your livelihood has always been our goal and we will continue to remain focused on implementing policies that accomplish that goal.
