Showing Leadership in Pakistan's Time of Crisis

When the chips are down our government has been quick to react and embody the social conscious that represents the values of Canada on the international stage.  We were quick to react when an earth quake devastated Haiti and now we are prepared to make sure those in Pakistan know they have a friend in Canada.

Pakistan has experienced the worst monsoon floods in 80 years, killing over 1,500 people and leaving millions in need of emergency assistance. Canada is showing leadership in Pakistan’s time of crisis.

Our government has pledged $33 million in aid to help those ravaged by the floods in Pakistan and, as we did with Haiti, we are encouraging Canadians to help by offering an incentive.  For every eligible donation by individual Canadians made between August 2 and September 12, to Canadian registered charities, the Government of Canada will contribute an equivalent amount to the Pakistan Floods Relief Fund.

We are responding to the urgent needs of millions of Pakistani people as they seek to care for their families and rebuild their lives in the wake of this devastating natural disaster.

Canada’s funding helps by providing the essentials most needed on the ground including clean drinking water, medical care, emergency shelter, protection, and essential household goods.  We will also provide urgent necessities such as bridges, to help the Government of Pakistan restore links to communities cut off by the flooding and help local authorities to provide security to those affected by this disaster.

The Government of Canada is working closely with experienced partners, such as United Nations humanitarian agencies, the Red Cross Movement and Canadian non-governmental organizations to ensure that this support funding provides the much-needed assistance.

In southern Manitoba we know the devastation caused by flooding and the lasting desperation that comes with it. That’s why we as a nation must reach out to help those struggling in Pakistan, because sometimes we need to put aside any differences and simply do the right thing.
