On Parliament Hill

Remaining Focussed on the Economy

Earlier this week, members of the Conservative caucus travelled back to Ottawa for a mid-summer meeting.  We discussed the concerns and issues our constituents have raised with us over the month of July and we discussed the continuing implementation of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.

While there continues to be speculation about election readiness, our focus remains firmly on continuing to implement our Action Plan.  And while we have recently seen some encouraging economic data, we fully understand that many Canadians are still being hurt by the global recession.

We are particularly concerned about Canadians who have lost their jobs.  These Canadians, in particular, expect their political representatives to keep our eye on the ball – on implementing an effective response.

Fortunately, Canadians are seeing benefits from the timely, targeted and temporary investments in our Economic Action Plan.  More than 80% of the investments in our Economic Action Plan are already being implemented, and we are working hard to implement the rest.

In fact, Canada continues to outperform on the world stage. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) says that of all the industrialized countries in the world, Canada has seen the smallest decline. As well, the IMF has projected that Canada will be one of the strongest to recover in the coming months.

We are leading by example with Canada’s Economic Action Plan. Tax cuts and targeted investments are providing important stimulus for businesses, helping to maintain and create needed jobs for Canadian workers. As the IMF put it, Canada’s Economic Action Plan is, “large, timely and well-targeted.”

As we prepare for the fall session, we will remain focussed on delivering our Action Plan.  If you want to hear partisan rhetoric and endless election speculation that will create no jobs and generate no economic activity, then listen to the other parties.

While the opposition are focussed on the priorities of politicians, we’re focussed on the economy – the real priority of Canadians.
