Conservative Action Building Economic Strength

The global recession continues to create challenges for Canadian families and businesses. However, we are increasingly seeing signs that we are edging closer to recovery, thanks in large part to the action our Conservative government is taking action to help strengthen our economy.

Statistics Canada is reporting that retail sales for hardware stores and pharmacies are showing increases. Overall, retail sales rose in five of the first seven months of 2009.  Experts have said the growing strength in hardware and building supply store sales is likely due to our Conservative government’s popular Home Renovation Tax Credit.

Additionally, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation reported that home construction went up by 12% in August.  We’re helping Canadians purchase their homes with tax incentives and opportunities.  Opportunities like the First Time Home Buyers’ Tax Credit, which provides up to $750 in tax relief that can be put towards closing costs, legal fees and disbursements.

In August, 27,000 new jobs were created across Canada.  There can be no doubt that our economic future is looking brighter every day. In fact, the Bank of Canada is reporting that we are on track for a stronger economy and will likely exceed expectations.

Unfortunately, despite the positive results we are seeing, Michael Ignatieff and the Liberals seem determined to undermine Canada’s recovery.  They continue to push for an election that Canadians neither want nor need.

Recently, Mr. Ignatieff led the Liberals in voting against the Home Renovation Tax Credit. He voted against it despite the thousands of Canadians who are saving their home renovation receipts for tax time.

Despite opposition obstructions, our Conservative government got the job done and passed our Home Renovation Tax Credit as well as new action for unemployed Canadians.

There is much more work to be done.

But Ignatieff and the Liberals continue to push for an election that could very well jeopardize Canada’s economic recovery. Why would Ignatieff risk the economic security of so many families and businesses?

The answer is clear. Michael Ignatieff is not in it for Canadians. He’s only in it for himself.  Our Conservative government is going to continue working for you.  We are going to fight this recession and deliver for families in Manitoba and for Canadians from coast to coast to coast.
