And then there were two
It does not seem that long ago that training camp opened for the eight Canadian Football League teams. It does not seem that long ago that the regular season officially kicked off. Only a few months ago, there was lots of speculation about which two teams would play in the final weekend.
And what a season it was. BC struggled mightily out of the gates, but put it together late to sneak into the playoffs. Edmonton found a running game, even though their newly acquired star running back, Jesse Lumsden, played less than one quarter in game one of the regular season before suffering a season ending injury. Calgary did not dominate quite like everyone thought, and Saskatchewan, while not looking dominant, kept snatching victories.
Montreal was very Montreal-esque in their domination of the league, thanks to yet another amazing season by QB Anthony Calvillo. Hamilton finally got out of the basement of the league and hosted a playoff game. Winnipeg made millions of changes, but failed to upgrade one of the most important positions – QB. And Toronto did not make changes and hoped it would be alright this year. It was not.
All that brings us to the final chapter of the 2009 season. Two teams remain. One team will be immortalized on the Grey Cup, and one team will become the answer to a trivia question: “which team did Montreal beat to win the 2009 Grey Cup?”
So, you may be (but probably are not) asking, who do I think will win the Grey Cup? I have to go with the Montreal Alouettes. After utterly dominating the league this year, I just do not foresee the Riders having enough to beat them. However, it is ONE game, and anything can happen in one game. If the Riders pull out the victory, I would consider it a huge upset.
In a matter of hours, we will know which team was the best in 2009.
