RCMP looking for missing swimmer

On July 14, 2012, at about 8pm, Portage la Prairie RCMP and local emergency services were dispatched to a report of a missing swimmer in the Assiniboine River near Poplar Point.

RCMP report that initial investigation indicates that a group of children had been swimming when one became distressed and went under the water. Police, emergency services and local residents searched the area for the 11-year-old girl without success. The RCMP underwater Recovery Team are scheduled to attend today to assess the conditions for an underwater search.

Update 07/16/12 11:29am

At about 10:30am on July 16, 2012, local searchers discovered the body of the 11-year-old girl who has been identified as the missing swimmer.

Police continue to investigate.
