Initiatives show an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure
The Chair of the Canadian Swine Health Board says initiatives aimed at reducing the risk of the transmission of swine disease are showing an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
Since its formation in 2009, the Canadian Swine Health Board has launched several projects to help protect the health of the Canadian swine herd including initiatives aimed at improving the detection of potential disease threats, improving on farm biosecurity and characterizing and combating specific diseases.
The 2012 Canadian Swine Health Forum, slated for next Wednesday and Thursday in Winnipeg, will bring pork producers from across Canada together with swine veterinarians and representatives of government and other industry stakeholders to discuss those efforts.
Canadian Swine Health Board Chair Florian Possberg observes it really does take less energy to prevent a problem than it does to fix it.
As we go along we continually see nature come up with new ways of challenging us as producers and we have to be proactive to protect our food supply.
Really it’s a new concept where the old adage that an once of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
We know that we’ve been able to really get ahead of some of the things that threaten our industry.
It’s like buying insurance, you never know what activities have prevented you from a disaster because the disaster never happened but we believe that we’ve initiated quite a number of activities that do protect our industry from health threats.
Possberg says the efforts of the Canadian Swine Health Board have taken the whole concept of preventive medicine to a higher level.
