RCMP investigate field fires

Portage la Prairie RCMP are investigating numerous field fires that occurred in and surrounding St. Ambroise, Manitoba, this past September.

On Sunday, September 30, 2012, Portage la Prairie RCMP and Fire Department, along with Elie Fire Department and St. Claude Fire Department, responded to 3 fires in and surrounding St. Ambroise, Manitoba. The Office of the Fire Commissioner assisted in the investigation.

Police say that the fires were located along Provincial Road 430 in the RM of Portage la Prairie, PR 411 east of St. Ambroise in the RM of Portage la Prairie and along the west side of Lake Road in St. Ambroise. The fires, combined, covered an extensive area, over a number of square miles.

RCMP report that the fires had posed a potential endangerment to 10 homes and structures in and around St. Ambroise. The Fire Department was able to extinguish the fires before damage was done to any of the buildings. No injuries were reported with this incident.

The Office of the Fire Commissioner deemed that the fires were not accidental. Police ask that anyone with information about this incident contact the Portage la Prairie RCMP at 204-857-4445 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
