The 9th annual Steinbach “Pick up and Walk” community clean up event will take place on Saturday, May 3rd, a little later than normal due to the snowfall received this year. Eldon Wallman, City of Steinbach Waste Department head explains, “With the record snowfall this winter and the slow spring melt, we felt the extra time was needed to let the grounds in and around Steinbach have a better opportunity to dry for the event.”

Hundreds have already signed up at their local church to help clean up the city. Families, church groups, co-workers, and friends will be walking through the community picking up garbage along the main streets and in the ditches and parks while getting some much needed exercise. Last year a total of 792 people picked up 7.19 tons of garbage in only 3 hours. Donavan Friesen, a pastor from Southland Church, and one of the community organizers for “Pick up and Walk”, looks forward to another great showing of volunteers. “This is such a meaningful event because it involves 17 Steinbach Churches, with people of all ages, showing unity in their love for their city. We are hopeful that, with the new date of May 3rd, many more will sign up to get involved.”

To get involved in this event, sign up at your local Steinbach church. All “Pick up and Walk” volunteers will be meeting at the T.G Smith Arena in Steinbach on Saturday, May 3rd at 9 am and everyone is welcome to participate (remember to wear your bright yellow t-shirt from last year!). From there, volunteers will be dispatched in groups of 6-10 and will be supplied with maps, routes, and garbage bags. People are encouraged to wear rubber boots, and to dress for the weather. A thank you, complimentary lunch will be provided at the arena at noon.
