The Manitoba government has launched a pilot project to extend the operating season of several provincial campgrounds, allowing campers to stay as late as Thanksgiving. This announcement was made by Conservation and Water Stewardship Minister Tom Nevakshonoff.

“The public has told us they want more time to explore the great outdoors in many parts of our province and we want to find ways to make that happen,” Minister Nevakshonoff said. “We know that fall can offer beautiful weather and scenery, so we want to give hardy campers an opportunity to extend their camping season.”

New camping opportunities have been added this year on a trial basis in locations across the province. The level of services available will vary by location, and campers should be prepared to bring their own drinking water and firewood.

In addition, campers are reminded provincial park entry will be free through the Labour Day long weekend. Park vehicle permits are not required in provincial parks from Friday, Sept. 4 to Monday, Sept. 7. Nightly camping fees still apply.

Provincial park interpreters will continue to offer programming on the long weekend, with highlights including amphitheatre presentations at Birds Hill, Grand Beach and St. Malo as well as guided tours of the recently re-opened Bohémier House in St. Norbert. The Alfred Hole Goose Sanctuary Visitor Centre offers unique viewing of Canada geese in fall migration and the Whiteshell Natural History Museum in Whiteshell Provincial Park will also be open.
