Off-road vehicle collision near Thompson

On June 16, 2010 at about 6:45pm, RCMP Thompson Rural Detachment received a cellular phone call of a collision on Jones Road south of Thompson.

While the caller provided some indications of where they were south of Thompson, their exact location was not known. Immediate vehicle patrols were unsuccessful in locating the scene and it was later determined that the collision involved an ATV (quad) on a trail rather than a collision on a road. One rider was reportedly seriously injured and being cared for by another rider who was accompanying him. Cellular phone reception was poor making it difficult to get any further information.

Members of the RCMP Thompson Municipal Unit, the RCMP Air Section, Thompson Fire & Emergency Services and Manitoba Conservation also responded and commenced a search for the two riders.

The pair were finally located about 2 hours later by the RCMP Aircraft and ATV searchers, approximately 3 km down a quad trail south of Thompson. The injured rider, a 43-year-old man from Thompson, had serious injuries. He was taken to Thompson General Hospital and has since been medivaced to Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg for further treatment. He is reported in stable but serious condition. The rider was wearing a full face helmet at the time of the collision.

The investigation into the collision continues and trail conditions may have been a factor.
