RCMP investigate fatal house fire

On July 26, 2010, at approximately 12:15pm, Fisher Branch RCMP responded to the scene of residential fire on the Fisher River Cree Nation.

Assisting the Fisher Branch RCMP were the Fisher River Cree Nation and Peguis First Nation Fire Departments, as well as local EMS.
 
Initial reports indicate that one unidentified adult has died in the blaze and a second person, an adult male, has been transported to hospital with serious burns.
 
Fire fighters battled the blaze, but were unable to save the residence. The deceased was located inside the house.
 
The Manitoba Office of the Fire Commissioner will be attending to assist with the investigation.
 
At this stage of the investigation a cause has not been determined.
 
The names of the injured and the deceased cannot be released at this time.

Update 07/29/10 10:39am

An autopsy has positively identified the deceased as 59-year-old Sydney Kirkness. Mr. Kirkness was a resident of Opaskwayak FN.

The investigation is continuing.
