On Parliament Hill

Pro-Life candidates no longer welcome in Trudeau’s Liberal Party

Last week, close to 10,000 Canadians rallied on Parliament Hill to express their pro-life views at the annual March for Life. This was democracy in action as Canadians from across the country gathered to make their pro-life views known.

However, Justin Trudeau was doing his best to make sure that future Liberal candidates would never be allowed to voice their pro-life beliefs.

The day before the Rally, Mr. Trudeau, the leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, announced publicly that any pro-life candidates wishing to seek the Liberal nomination in their ridings need not apply. The Liberal Party leader stated that he has “made it clear that future candidates need to be completely understanding that they will be expected to vote pro-choice on any bills.”

This essentially means that all future Liberal Candidates must support abortion if they expect to be approved as a candidate for the Liberal Party.

The Liberal leader said it is part of the screening process to ask candidates where they stand on a number of issues, ranging from same-sex marriage to abortion.

He added, “We make sure that the people who are stepping forward are consistent with the Liberal Party as it is now, as it stands under my leadership…”

To add insult to injury, Mr. Trudeau chose to make his proclamation on the day before the largest pro-life rally in Canada. I find this deeply troubling.

As a Conservative Member of Parliament, I am free to state that I am pro-life and that I believe that life begins at conception. Unfortunately for Liberals, holding opposing views to the Liberal leader on issues such as this will no longer be acceptable in the party led by Justin Trudeau.

All of this is in stark contrast to what Mr. Trudeau had promised. Recently he stated, “I’m calling for open nominations for all Liberal candidates in every single riding in the next election.”

This is a flip flop for the ages. On one hand he promises open nominations and on the other he states that he is only open to candidates who think like him. In one fell swoop Justin Trudeau has made his party into a clone of the NDP – another party where there is absolutely no room for differing beliefs on this issue.

It appears Mr. Trudeau believes that MP’s who hold pro-life views are somehow unworthy of holding public office and those candidates should be screened out of the process, which leads to the inevitable question…What other views will Justin Trudeau weed out next?
