This season of racing has been very challenging but also extremely exciting with a lot of new adventures along the way.
I was approached by Randy Wolgemuth and Adam Crookes at S.A.R. Sport and Recreation in Steinbach about the possibility of starting a racing championship that would feature the Polaris Slingshot. The Slingshot is a unique 3 wheeler roadster with an open cockpit, it is available at S.A.R.
We spent countless hours thinking/planning and eventually came up with a unique concept we could all agree on. In the spring we went ahead and launched the Slingshot Racing Cup, the world’s first racing championship to feature the Slingshot.
It was enormous undertaking with a lot of things that needed to fall into place. A lot of credit goes to Randy and Adam at S.A.R. for having this vision, the belief that it would work, and the patience to see it through even in the difficult moments.
We needed a minimum number of participants before we would start, and to our amazement, we ended up blowing past our minimum number and had 8 Slingshots lining up to take the green flag at the beginning of the year.
The season went phenomenally well. It took a lot of planning to ensure the championship was a success but we were also privileged to have drivers with a passion for racing and also a desire to do it safely.
The Slingshot itself performed perfectly and far exceeded my personal expectations…it was SO much fun to drive. It also produced some extremely close racing, and at one event, we actually had the top 4 Slingshots all finish just 1.8 seconds apart.
When the final champagne was sprayed to end the season just a short time ago, we all had a smile on our face.
It was the first time I had been on the organization end of a championship and it was a lot of fun for me to be part of. It was also a blast to do a season of wheel to wheel racing right here in Manitoba.
I’m looking forward to the opportunities that will arise from our success in creating the Slingshot Racing Cup. It’s been a pleasure working with Randy, Adam, and everyone else at S.A.R., and I can’t wait to see what’s next.
The dream to race in the Indy 500 or 24 Hours of Le Mans has taken another step closer to reality this season, and I couldn’t be happier.
