Diamond Jubilee Celebration

  • Kelvin Goertzen, Author
  • Member of the Legislative Assembly, Steinbach

This year the Diamond Jubilee celebration is taking place in Commonwealth countries around the world to mark the 60th anniversary of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II and residents of the southeast will be given an opportunity to take part in a special way.

Beginning Wednesday May 30th, a book of celebration will be available for signing at City Hall in Steinbach for residents to send their messages to Queen Elizabeth II who is now the second longest serving British monarch. A book of celebration has been available at the Manitoba Legislature since earlier this year and this will be an opportunity for local residents to be part of this special celebration.

Across Canada there are a number of special events taking place as part of the Diamond Jubilee. This past week began a visit by Prince Charles and his wife Camilla to Canada. At the Legislature there have been special flags which have been on display and the building has been lit with special lighting displaying the Diamond Jubilee symbol.

In addition, Diamond Jubilee medals will be presented to Canadians who have made a significant contribution to Canada in a variety of different activities and occupations. Others, including military personal and members of law enforcement will also be eligible to receive this tribute.

Canada, Manitoba and the City of Steinbach itself have had a special connection with Queen Elizabeth II and I hope that many local residents will visit Steinbach City Hall beginning later next week to leave a special message of congratulations as part of the celebration.
