Appreciation was the focus of a special ceremony held at the Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site. The site, an integral part of the RCMP’s past, was the perfect backdrop to honour those who have shown dedication and loyalty to the Force. Assistant Commissioner Bill Robinson, Commanding Officer of “D” Division, presented several awards including bravery, outstanding service and certificates of appreciation.

A total of 45 staff, comprised of regular members, civilian members and public service employees, received Long Service Awards for celebrating 20, 25, 30 and 35 years of service.

Two regular members received the Commanding Officer’s Commendation for Bravery. These members demonstrated courage and bravery in the face of very dangerous circumstances that gave rise to the potential for grievous harm, bodily injury or death.

The recipients were:

Constable Kevin Bernier was recognized for his courageous and meritorious actions on August 11, 2011, in The Pas. While off duty, Cst. Bernier came to the aid of a woman being attacked by a man. Cst. Bernier alone subdued the male and managed to keep the victim at the scene until other members arrived.

Constable Gilles Gravelle was recognized for his courageous and meritorious efforts in the rescue, on July 23, 2011, in The Pas, of a young woman who had walked into the flooded Saskatchewan River. Cst. Gravelle retrieved the young woman from the water while wearing his full duty belt and with no flotation device and proceeded to administer CPR until assistance arrived.

Three Regular Members, one Civilian Member and two members of the public received the Commanding Officer Certificate of Appreciation. In addition, Chief Rick Hiebert of the Winkler Police Service and Chief Brad Neduzak of the Morden Police Service accepted the Commissioners Certificate of Appreciation for their role in the 2010 Winter Olympics.

“Honouring the contributions of Regular Members, Civilian Members and Public Service Employees is one of my greatest honours” said Assistant Commissioner Bill Robinson. “Keeping Canadians safe is the service we pride ourselves on, and the fact that they have been doing it for decades show the quality of our Force, and the high level of commitment this organization inspires in its members.”
