A Challenging Time

2020 has been a challenging time for everyone. It has been a time of stress, worry and anxiety that has touched virtually all parts of society. And in Manitoba, as COVID-19 numbers escalate, this is particularly true. When the pandemic started, it would have been difficult for most to identify anyone they knew who had been infected with the virus. However, today, most people will know someone and many, including myself, know several people who have lost their life because of COVID-19.

This past week the southeast region entered the Code Red restriction level which has caused the closure or limitation of a number of businesses and activities. While this adds to the challenges that everyone is facing, we have seen some of the highest rates in Canada of transmission of the virus right here in Steinbach and Hanover. Sadly, we have also seen the death of several residents as a result and we extend to their families and friends our deepest condolences.

And while the virus impacts most directly those who have it, it reaches beyond that. As of early this week, there were 200 people in hospital because of COVID-19 and ICU beds were near capacity. As a result of the strain on staff and bed space, there had been 397 elective surgeries that had to be postponed since October 26th. This is just one example of how there are wide ranging impacts on the health care system as a result of a high number of COVID-19 cases.

There is no dispute that these are difficult times. They are challenging for those who are dealing with the illness of COVID-19 and they are difficult for those who are dealing with issues of isolation and mental health challenges either brought on specifically because of the pandemic or made worse by it. They are hard for front line workers, for those in education, for those in the service industry. None of these challenges should be diminished.

But there is also reason to be hopeful. First of all, these challenges while here today, will not always be here. There will be a time when the pandemic is past. And, in the interim, we do know that there are steps that if taken collectively as a society can reduce the impact of COVID-19. We know that because we have done it before in Manitoba.

There is little doubt that with the 2nd wave of the virus has come fatigue. People are tired of everything that is related to the pandemic. And it is at this time, perhaps like never before in our lifetime, that we need to show the kindness and caring that Manitobans and Canadians are famous for. While we may not be able to get together to show that kindness, there are more ways than ever to reach out and connect with someone. Your kindness and compassion can make all the difference in this time of challenge.
