Local Residents Honoured for Providing Hope, Care

Communities and the residents who live in them are strengthened by many things. Often, we focus on things such as hospitals, schools and recreation facilities. And, while those things are critically important to any community, it is the people themselves who truly make a community strong.

In southeast Manitoba, we are very fortunate to have residents who understand that communities are made stronger when we give back. That sometimes takes the form of charitable giving which southeast Manitoba is famous for. Sometimes that is through volunteering our time. Often it is through demonstrating a spirit of leadership and providing hope and optimism when it is needed most.

This past Tuesday evening I had the opportunity, together with Premier Heather Stefanson and Manitoba’s Lieutenant Governor, Anita Neville, to present 10 local Steinbach Constituency residents with Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medals. It has now been some time since the passing of Queen Elizabeth II however her Jubilee year celebrations have continued on and have been marked by these special medals approved by the office of the Governor General of Canada. In Manitoba, only 1,000 of these medals are being awarded. While there are literally hundreds of local individuals who would be worthy of recognition, with only 10 who were able to be selected locally, those chosen represent diverse service backgrounds who have distinguished themselves by bringing hope and care to local residents.

Paul Dyck, the long-time coach of the Steinbach Pistons who has both mentored young players and developed a solid local MJHL program in Steinbach that has entertained thousands in the region received a Platinum Jubilee Medal. Dr. Curtis Krahn has provided medical care to many in our region and around the world and was a deserving recipient. David Driedger has helped ensure housing and support for seniors including being instrumental in the new Rest Haven Personal Care home and was honored with a medal. Also being honoured was Mayor Earl Funk and Deputy Mayor Michael Zwaagstra in recognition of their municipal leadership in the area. As well, recently retired RM of Hanover Reeve Stan Toews received a medal.

Jorie Sawatzky, who has for many years welcomed new Filipino residents to the area was awarded a medal as was Evelyn Krahn who is a long-time community volunteer and for many years assisted local Steinbach constituents. Pastor Terry Kaufmann is local pastor who has provided spiritual care to thousands of residents and was a deserving recipient. And local radio host, entertainer and community supporter Corny Rempel has put smiles on the faces of many through the years and was honoured as well.

The diverse backgrounds of these recipients speak to the many incredible people we have in our region, and they are simply a representative slice of all those who bring hope, care and optimism to our communities. Congratulations to each of them. I was truly honoured to stand beside them as they received this recognition.
