Canadians across the country will celebrate the country’s 144th birthday on Friday, July 1st. This year, as in years past, it will be marked by day long festivities in communities across Manitoba and will be capped with fireworks displays in many areas.

Canadians patriotism has always run deep but it is usually displayed more as gratitude than as boastfulness. Canadians know that we are among the luckiest people in the world to have either been born in this country or to have adopted it as our home. Through the real life experiences of new Canadians or through the stories of our ancestors, we have learned in vivid detail that there are many others who do not enjoy the freedoms and economic opportunities that we do in modern day Canada.

As a result, the Canada Day celebrations are often as much about recognizing we are among the most blessed people in the world as they are a display of pride in our great country.

I hope that you and your family have a wonderful Canada Day celebration. Happy Birthday Canada – The True North Strong and Free!

More Bi-Pole III Deception

As the debate over the location of the planned Bi-Pole III route continues, it is becoming more and more evident that NDP Premier Greg Selinger will say and do almost anything to try to convince Manitobans his decision to put the new hydro transmission line on the longer west side route makes any sense at all.

Earlier this month, on a radio debate regarding Bi-Pole III, Mr. Selinger defended his decision to run the line on a west side route that will cost every Manitoba family $11,748 by saying that it couldn’t go on the east side of Lake Winnipeg because it would jeopardize a UNESCO world heritage application for the east side forest.

In fact, Mr. Selinger said that the people he had spoken with at UNESCO had told him as much. Premier Selinger said these UNESCO officials told him that a world heritage site designation would likely fail if the Bi-Pole III line went down the east side.

There was a problem with Premier Selinger’s comment however. When pressed by reporters to identify the UNESCO officials he met with, Mr. Selinger was forced to admit that he had not actually met with anyone from UNESCO. He had just simply made that meeting up.

The decision as to where to build the new Bi-Pole III transmission line is a very important one for all Manitobans. It deserves better than a Premier who is willing to deceive Manitobans about issues related to the decision simply to try to defend the indefensible.
