Many Manitobans know the story of  Winnipeg’s Cliff and Wilma Derksen. It’s a story that begins in heartbreak with the disappearance of their 13 year old daughter Candace who went missing in the winter of 1984 and was found dead several weeks later.

The story of Candace’s disappearance and search, one of the largest in Winnipeg’s history, is told in the book Have You Seen Candace? Since then the Derksen’s have endured years of legal turmoil in the search for Candace’s killer and in the search for justice.

However from this tragedy of the loss of a young life has come something very different and perhaps unexpected. Manitobans have come to know the Derksen’s not just for the loss that they have endured but for the hope and forgiveness that they have displayed since Candace’s death. Through the entire process, including the years of legal procedures, the Derksen’s have displayed a grace that is difficult for many of us to understand given the things they have experienced.

Over the years the Derksen’s have been strong advocates for ensuring that victims are supported in the justice system. In fact, earlier this year Wilma Derksen was awarded the Order of Manitoba which is the highest honour that can be granted in Manitoba. It was awarded for the years of victim awareness and advocacy she has provided.

Last month I again had the opportunity to meet the Derksen’s. This time it was at a family fun day that they were hosting in Winnipeg. It was a fundraiser for their most recent cause, Candace House. Candace House is envisioned to be a place, located near the courthouse in Winnipeg, that will meet the needs of those affected by serious crime. Candace House would be a place for victims of crime to both rest and to connect with others as they seek information and encouragement regarding their interaction with the justice system.

Currently there is a board of directors in place that is continuing to raise funds for Candace House as they seek a suitable place for it to be housed. It is a non-profit, non-partisan charity. If you would like to learn more about Candace House you can visit their website at www.candacehouse.net.
