Each of us has a perspective through which we see the world and our own individual lives. And that perspective can change as we get older and as our life circumstances change. As well, that perspective can be influenced by what we see around us and the events that happen around the world.

It’s not unusual for things to pile up in our busy lives that cause us to lose perspective. The vehicle breaks down, an appliance stops working, and the flu bug sweeps through the household. In the grand scheme of things these are more of an inconvenience than anything else but they are unplanned for and often throw life out of balance. I know this from personal experience!

But it doesn’t take much more than watching the evening news to gain a bit of perspective. Almost nightly there are stories about thousands of people who are without a home and many without a country to call home. Regularly there are the reports of grieving families of victims of violent acts dealing with the tragedy of loss and lives that are forever changed. These realities are heart wrenching, and they also provide us with a new perspective about our own lives. Suddenly the inconveniences that we encounter from time to time seem like not much more than that, inconveniences.

Christmas time also brings us perspective. Of course the message of hope that came from the first Christmas, from a manger in Bethlehem, offers perspective on life. Perhaps that is why while acts of kindness and giving are around us all year long; it seems that there is never more of this kindness than at Christmas time. Add to this hope and kindness the Christmas lights, gatherings and special events and it is little wonder that this time of year brings to many people a special perspective. It can bring into sharp focus an appreciation for the many blessings that we have and are grateful for as well as the difficulty others face.

Because, for some, it can also be a difficult time as it can be a reminder of loss. For those that are remembering loved ones who are no longer here to celebrate at Christmas, or who are experiencing other difficulties, this time of the year can be difficult.

Whatever Christmas 2015 has brought to you and to your family, my wish is that the perspective of Christmas, the one that offers hope and peace and that demonstrates the best in humanity, will bring you joy. If you are dealing with a difficult time this Christmas, may the caring and kindness that is so prevalent at this time of year find a way to touch you and to comfort you. May Christmas 2015 bring you a perspective of hope and contentment that will remain with you throughout the New Year.

On behalf of my wife Kim and my son Malachi, we wish each of you a Merry Christmas!
