As many of you have heard, this year we are celebrating the 100th anniversary of women receiving the right to vote in Manitoba. In fact, Manitoba was the first province in Canada in which this important right was won by women. And while much has changed in 100 years, women are still underrepresented in our provincial and federal elected Legislative Chambers and so this year is not only a celebration, but a reminder of work that must still be done.
There are other milestones drawing near for our province as well. The Manitoba Legislature will celebrate its 100th birthday in 2020. Recognized by many as the most beautiful provincial legislature in Canada, it remains as grand today as the day it opened. Also in 2020 Manitoba will, as a province, celebrate its 150th birthday.
As we celebrate this year and in the lead up to other milestones it is a great reminder of the special history of our province and the greatness of its potential.
