This week marks the 100th anniversary of a battle that occurred during one of the bloodiest wars in the history of the world, a battle that saw soldiers from all corners of Canada come together in the face of adversity.

At the Battle of Vimy Ridge, the world turned its eyes on Canada and it’s widely regarded by many historians as the moment when Canada stood on its own; as the moment when Canada became a nation. However, that moment must always be remembered for the tremendous sacrifice and the lives that were lost. It will also remind us that the freedom we enjoy today has come at a heavy cost paid by many young Canadians generations ago.

To honour the Manitoba soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in World War I, the province has planned several tributes to mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, including naming thirteen lakes in the Flin Flon region in honour of fallen Manitoban soldiers from the First World War.
