Merry Christmas To All

Last week I visited with employees in the Department of Health to both wish them a Merry Christmas and a happy holiday and to thank them for the work they have done over the past year. As Minister for the Department of Health for the province of Manitoba, it is not something I often get a chance to do and I wanted to let them know how much I appreciate their work in what are often difficult and challenging jobs.

In the conversations I had, it was clear that for many health employees there would be few holidays over the Christmas break. In particular, those involved in the field of mental health noted that this can be a particularly busy time for them as many people struggle with difficult memories and emotions which are intensified during this time of year. They will be on the job in an effort to help those who need support during this time of year.

It is the dichotomy of Christmas. For some, it can be the most joyous time of the year while for others it can be a time of struggle and painful memories of those who are no longer here. Fortunately, there seems to be a growing awareness that this time of the year can be difficult for many and all around us we see charitable efforts and individual acts of kindness to try to ensure that everyone is able to find joy at Christmas. From food and toy drives to more discreet acts of giving and thoughtfulness, it truly is the most generous time of the year.

It is perhaps fitting that the very first Christmas had its share of struggle, joy and giving as well. The struggle for shelter, the joy of the birth of Jesus and the giving of gifts and a new hope for the world. And from that first Christmas came the call for kindness to one another and for peace on earth.

For my family and I, this Christmas will be a time of reflection and gratitude. While the past year has not been without challenges, we are grateful for each other and for the opportunity to spend time together. We are thankful for the many individuals who support us in their prayers and words of encouragement. And it is with that gratitude that we hope our prayers and giving will reach those for whom this Christmas is simply not filled with joy.

And it is our sincere hope that the message of Christmas, which surpasses our earthly understanding, touches everyone regardless of the circumstances. May it bring you peace, joy and a desire to be a blessing to those around you.

To you and your family, Merry Christmas!
