End of Session

  • Kelvin Goertzen, Author
  • Member of the Legislative Assembly, Steinbach

Thursday November 8th was the final day of the Fall Session in the Legislature. After a short break, a new session of the Legislature begins on Tuesday, November 20th with a Thone Speech as government looks forward to a new set of priorities.

The end of the fall session provides an opportunity to reflect on the work done by MLA’s over the past few months. From evenings full of voting on legislation to listening to Manitobans during committee meetings, our government has accomplished a lot for Manitoba since the start of October. As House Leader, I enjoyed engaging with official opposition parties to make sure that government priorities move forward.

This fall the government passed the Budget Implementation bill as well as our government’s Climate and Green Plan, which has a strong green plan without the imposition of a Carbon Tax by Manitoba. In addition, legislation was passed to curtail night hunting. This practice has proven to be dangerous and the new legislation is intended to help protect Manitobans. Also passed this past session was legislation to help ensure that the deficit continues to be reduced every year as we continue on the path to returning to a balanced budget. I continue to hear from Steinbach constituents that returning to a balanced budget is a priority for them and we are on track to do just that.

Thank you to all Manitobans who have taken time to present at a public committee on legislation or to participate in a pre-budget survey or to email or call with your suggestions. Your input and feedback is critical as we work to strengthening our province for today and for tomorrow.
