On Tuesday our government opened a new session of the Manitoba Legislature with the Speech from the Throne. The Speech from the Throne is delivered by the Lieutenant Governor, her Honour Janice Filmon, and establishes the priorities of the government for the upcoming year.

The Throne Speech outlined a number of important priorities. This included the development of a province wide Clinical and Preventative Services Plan to help better deliver health care in a coordinated way and to reduce wait-times for key procedures. It also committed to freezing the expansion of gambling while a proper review is undertaken and looking at new measures to reduce drinking and driving. The Throne Speech emphasized the need to do a better job preparing our young people for a competitive job market and the upcoming Kindergarten to Grade 12 review which will be an important part of ensuring that happens.

Over the next two weeks, MLAs will have the opportunity to debate and vote on the Throne Speech. I look forward to working with all Manitobans and all elected members of the Legislature to ensure that the priorities of Manitobans are being heard and acted upon.
