Investments in Hip, Knee, and Cataract Procedures

Our government recently announced more than $5.3 million to significantly increase the number of hip and knee replacement surgeries and cataract surgeries in Manitoba in 2019. This investment will mean an additional 1,000 hip and knee surgeries, and at least 2,000 more cataract surgeries here in Manitoba. This investment means 25% more hip/knee replacements and 16% more cataract surgeries will take place across the province this year.

These investments were recommended by the Wait Times Reduction Task Force as a significant and meaningful way to reduce wait times in Manitoba. This will move us further towards our goal of being the most-improved province in Canada, and will make sure that Manitobans have better access to these high-demand procedures faster than before. As our population ages, these types of procedures have become more and more necessary, and better, quicker care means getting Manitobans back to their homes faster.

The health system transformation process continues to look for opportunities for improvement while focusing on patient outcomes. Our government is committed to improving the long-term sustainability of our health-care system while focusing on providing quality care to Manitobans who need it.
