The Beginning of a New Year

  • Kelvin Goertzen, Author
  • Member of the Legislative Assembly, Steinbach

The beginning of a New Year is a great time to reflect back on the previous year and most importantly, to look ahead to the coming year.

This past year has been a time of change for me as I took on a new role as Minister of Education and Training, Minister responsible for Immigration and Government House Leader. It was an honour to serve as the Minister of Health for the past almost two and a half years but it is exciting to take on new responsibilities as well. I am particularly thankful to the many professionals who have supported me in these roles. Their expertise and advice has been invaluable. However, I am most thankful to the residents of the Steinbach Constituency who have offered their encouragement and their support as I’ve taken on these challenging and time consuming responsibilities.

Looking forward to 2019, our government will be advancing on a number of priorities in Education and elsewhere, and we are making improvements for Manitobans.

This year will mean the launch of the Kindergarten – Grade 12 Education Review, and with it will bring an opportunity to improve how we educate our children and what the future holds for them. It will be the first such comprehensive review in decades. I know that there needs to be a focus on better student outcomes, greater accountability, and better pathways to careers. I believe this generational review of how we prepare our students for the future will be critical to ensuring that our students are positioned to be the leaders of tomorrow that we will need. I am looking forward to this tremendous opportunity to make sure our children are ready for the future.
