Festival Reflects Community

The Summer in the City festival has only been in existence for a relatively short period of time in Steinbach and yet it is already an event that has been embraced by the community and region. For several years there was a debate about whether a street party in Manitoba’s third largest city would be a welcomed addition to the summer events calendar. There is no debate any longer.

What makes Summer in the City so successful is that it so well reflects the community in which it is hosted. It properly blends diversity with vibrancy with a touch of tradition.

One of the most popular sections of the festival is the Cultures in the City portion which features food stations from around the world and a stage with entertainment from a variety of cultures. On Friday night, with hundreds watching and many more standing in line for food, the Norman Chief Memorial Dancers were one of the groups I was pleased to welcome to Steinbach. Former Winnipeg MLA and lead dancer Kevin Chief, always makes a point of mentioning that this is one of the groups favorite events to participate in. Judging by the warm reception they received, it is no wonder.

On Saturday, Eastman Immigration Services held a ceremony to welcome new Canadians who call our region home. I appreciated being able to say a few worlds of welcome along with Deputy Mayor Michael Zwaagstra who was an instrumental part of the creation of Summer in the City. The recognition of these new Canadians helps to reflect the growth and welcoming nature of our community.

The main stage is also popular to see professional acts and local artists. All day and evening long it is a reminder of the many talented people who call southeast Manitoba home.

While the midway is clearly a popular attraction for young people, as evidenced by the long lines, I enjoy simply walking along the street and seeing the many demonstrations and vendors lining Main Street. Watching thousands of friends and neighbors crowd the street and reconnect with each other is a valuable part of the festival that sometimes goes overlooked.

While there is a need for more volunteers to help support Summer in the City, it is clear that it is a hit among local residents. Its success can be at least partially credited to the fact that organizers have made sure to make the event reflective of the community itself and to try to involve as many facets of the community as possible. Everyone involved in this years Summer in the City should be proud of their efforts. Thankfully, this marks only the beginning of the summer events calendar in the region. I look forward to attending the many great events we have in our local communities during the coming weeks.
