Decoration

When life hands you lemons we’ve heard you need to make lemonade. When October hands us a whopper of a wet snow, you need to make Evergreen decorations for Christmas.

I made this little creation up at my wife’s request (See picture). By the way she’s the organized. Systematic, logical ducks in a row kind of personality and I’m the lose canon, creative entrepreneur personality. (On a complete side note I was having breakfast with a friend this morning. I half lamented the fact that I was a little bit of a loose cannon in my organization skills. At which he responded, “But you are a cannon!” I maybe too optimistic but I took it as a compliment.)

So I had some ideas. After the Storm had bent some Cedars and broken some Spruce tips off, I got creative and practical at the same time. Any of you could do this at home, please try it. The Mainframe of this piece is the tip off of a Brandon Cedar. There are Blue Spruce branches filling in, along with a few Calgary Carpet Juniper tips that needed pruning. I used more Spruce and Woodward Cedar branches to fill in near the bottom of the display as well as around the base of the pot. All the flower globes are Annabelle hydrangea heads. Annabelle Hydrangeas hold their dried flower heads until pruned off, I think they can make a beautiful decoration! These are all things just kicking around my yard. You too can make something fun like this after a snowstorm destroys your shrubs, a small way to bring life into what got lost.

My wife sent the picture to my brother-in-law to see what he thought. He responded by saying, “I wandered around the backyard and picked up dead sticks and flowers in the back yard all afternoon and I came up with nothing!” Oh well, No brownie points from his wife I guess. It does take a little time and some creative vision, but this is one fun way to use up your broken branches from the storm. When life hands us a mountain of snow in October, try making art instead of a fuss, it’s better for the blood pressure.
