Last week at the Manitoba Legislature a special license plate for both full-time and volunteer firefighters was unveiled. The special plate will pay tribute to those individuals who put their lives on the line to protect people and property from fire.

The initiative for the special plate came from a private members bill brought forward by the Progressive Conservative Caucus. It built upon previous legislation that allows veterans to have a special insignia on their vehicle license plates. It was important that volunteer firefighters be included in this special recognition because they dedicate so much of their time, day and night, to protecting our home communities.

Government and taxpayers simply could not pay for the service that thousands of volunteer firefighters provide. They, their families and their employers deserve our thanks for allowing this life-saving service to be provided. The ability to be recognized on the new license plates is just a small way to pay recognition to the men and women who are there to protect our homes and our communities.
