This week Janice Filmon was named as the new Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba by Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Mrs. Filmon is an outstanding selection to fill this role and to become the 25th provincial Lieutenant Governor and the second women to hold the office.

The Lieutenant Governor is, constitutionally, the Queen’s representative in Manitoba. While the role has a great deal of ceremonial status to it, the office is very much what an individual chooses to make of it. As one of Manitoba’s most dedicated volunteers (she is currently the chair of the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation), Mrs. Filmon is sure to bring to the position a number of different causes she hopes to increase awareness of.

The Lieutenant Governor can also play an important role in both representing our province and educating people about our democracy and government. I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Mrs. Filmon for a number of years and her genuine and caring nature will make her a natural to connect with people in her role as Manitoba’s Lieutenant Governor. I look forward to working with Mrs. Filmon and am confident she will be a tremendous Lieutenant Governor for our province.

I would also like to thank the outgoing Lieutenant Governor, Philip Lee and his family, who have worked with dedication in that role since 2009.
