It was my pleasure to honour in the Legislature last week Teena Cole, Eva Wolfe and John Rempel who received the Lifesaving Society Rescue and Commonwealth Award on March 9th from Manitoba Lieutenant Governor, the Honourable Janice Filmon.

Last April, Teena, Eva and John were driving down Highway 59, near Highway 52, when they saw a cloud of dust rise up and immediately knew something was wrong. What they saw was a car in the ditch, sinking into a high level of water. The water was fast-moving and soon the current began to move the car, with a young girl trapped inside. The trio ran down to the water’s edge to calm the girl, before trying to flag down others on the roadside for help. Quick thinking led to a tow rope being thrown into the water, to attach to the sunroof of the car in order for it to be pulled in close to the bank. 911 was called and together with other motorists who had stopped to help, they were able to rescue the girl.

When receiving the Lifesaving Society Rescue and Commonwealth Award for their actions, Teena, Eva and John humbly accepted it on behalf of all the people on scene that day. They firmly said that their actions were “what anybody else would have done.” My colleagues and I were pleased to join in the Legislature to honour these local residents who showed the best of our province to someone in need.
