Last Thursday I was joined by Hanover School Division trustees, staff and students to announce that Steinbach Regional Secondary School (SRSS) will receive provincial funding to replace their aging elevator.
With the growing number of students, the SRSS has become like a city within our city and investments to keep student life at the SRSS functioning well for all students are important.
The project was the Hanover School Division’s highest priority on their five-year capital plan request for Access projects. It will allow for students who require wheel chairs or scooters and an attendant to have sufficient space compared to the current elevator.
The plans to replace the current elevator in the older part of the school are now complete and it is anticipated to proceed to public tender in September, 2017. The replacement elevator will meet current Accessible Design standards and will enable students to access the science classrooms and other amenities on the second floor of the school, as well as accommodate students who require wheel chair and scooter access.
The project will be supported through more than $92.4 million in planned capital investment by the province in 2017-18 for public school infrastructure projects, prioritizing the health and safety of students and educators and accommodating growing student enrollment across Manitoba.
