View From the Legislature

This past week I did something that I have not had the opportunity to do before.

This Thursday, from British Columbia to Newfoundland, Canadians will celebrate the 143rd birthday of their country.

The most recent session of the Manitoba Legislature was largely focused around the NDP government’s decision to end balanced budget legislation in the province of Manitoba.

Constituents often tell me that they are frustrated by the fact that the justice system in Manitoba seems to be based on a revolving door model.

The passing this past weekend of former Manitoba Premier Duff Roblin brought the man voted The Greatest Manitoban back to the front pages of newspapers and to the top of the newscycle.

At any given time in the province of Manitoba there are 10,000- 12,000 outstanding arrest warrants.

One of the roles of the Official Opposition in our system of democracy is to review the expenditures of government and those organizations that are in some way directly tied to government.

When it comes to dangerous offenders, the best place for them is a jail cell. However, there are many people who are released into the community either because they are awaiting trial and so not yet convicted, or because they are on some form of probation or parole.

There was a significant announcement last week about a new economic deal signed between the provinces of British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan.

This past week in Justice Committee I learned that the NDP government has a fund of money set aside to purchase things like Slurpees, donuts, baseball tickets, clothes and a host of other goodies for high risk criminals and car thieves.
