Shop Foreman

Position Overview

The Shop Foreman is responsible for executing the daily production plan established together with the Production Manager and ensuring efficient fabrication operations on the shop floor. This role provides direct leadership to fabrication personnel, ensuring work is performed safely, efficiently, and to the required quality standards. The Shop Foreman acts as the primary link between management and shop employees, coordinating daily activities and supporting the production schedule.

Key Responsibilities

Production Execution

• Execute the daily production schedule.
• Assign daily tasks to shop employees and ensure job expectations are clearly understood.
• Communicate job details including fabrication requirements, estimated time, special notes, and weld procedures.
• Ensure employees are prepared and ready to begin work at the start of each shift.
• Aid in the setup of work stations as needed for efficiency in fabrication.

Team Leadership

• Supervise fabrication personnel and monitor attendance, productivity, and work quality.
• Provide coaching, teaching, and technical support to employees.
• Participate in employee interviews, testing, hiring, discipline, and performance reviews.
• Recognize strong performance while addressing performance concerns when required.

Quality Control

• Review all work, that it meets company quality standards and fabrication specifications.
• Ensure proper completion of work order documentation, drawings, and QC sheets.
• Review completed job paperwork and make corrections on employee hours as needed to provide accurate times for billable hours.

Shop Coordination

• Coordinate work between fabrication teams and machine operators, including blasting, painting, and shipping & receiving, as required.
• Ensure work is delivered to the correct stations in the proper sequence.
• Notify teams when materials are ready for outsourcing such as galvanizing or powder coating.
• Assist in calling in helpers for delivery/pickups when needed.
• Perform weekly inventory checks on shielding gas and propane, and communicate needs with supplier.

Safety & Compliance

• Enforce shop safety procedures and ensure safe work practices are followed.
• Assist with weld testing and maintain CWB documentation and certification records.
• Participate in CWB audits and maintain required documentation.

Communication

• Conduct weekly crew talks to review upcoming jobs, completed work, safety topics, and shop updates.
• Maintain communication between shifts and oversee coordination with the night shift leader.
• Collaborate with the Production Manager to improve workflows and production efficiency.
