The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is investigating the circumstances surrounding serious injuries sustained by a female suspect while in custody in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba.
On July 5, 2022 the RCMP notified the IIU of an incident that occurred on July 1. According to the notification, RCMP responded to a call for service in Amaranth, Manitoba. A female was arrested and transported to Portage La Prairie for lodging. Once the female was in a cell an incident occurred that required officers to use force to restrain the female. Upon release the female complained of pain in her hand, face and arms and was transported to Portage District General Hospital for treatment. On July 5, RCMP learned that the female had sustained a broken nose and a broken right arm/wrist.
As a broken arm/wrist is defined as a serious injury under the IIU regulations, the IIU is mandated to investigate.
