The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is investigating circumstances surrounding the motor vehicle pursuit of an adult male by the Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNP) that resulted in him sustaining a serious injury.

According to the notification, on the morning of August 30, 2022, at approximately 6:01 a.m., an MFNP member was responding to a report of a disturbance in Roseau River First Nation. At 7:45 a.m., a subject motor vehicle was observed in the First Nation resulting in the member activating his police vehicle’s emergency lights and making an attempt to conduct a traffic stop. The subject motor vehicle accelerated at a high rate of speed, was observed to brake abruptly at a stop sign and slide into a ditch. The driver, who was apprehended after a short foot chase, had sustained an injury to his ankle. EMS was called and transported him to Morris General Hospital. It was subsequently confirmed that the male driver had suffered a broken ankle.

As a broken ankle meets the definition of a serious injury under the IIU regulations, the IIU is mandated to investigate.

Witnesses or other individuals who have information or video footage that may assist this investigation are asked to contact the IIU toll free at 1-844-667-6060.
