The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) has concluded its investigation into an allegation of a careless discharge of a firearm by a Springfield Police Service officer within the detachment office. The civilian director of the IIU has determined there are reasonable grounds to believe offences occurred under the Criminal Code.

As a result of the investigation, Springfield Police Service Cst. Jesse Zillman and Tyler Froese, a former officer with the police service, have each been issued a summons for December 6, 2022, in Beausejour Provincial Court for careless use of a firearm and obstruct justice, contrary to s. 86(1) and 139(2) of the Criminal Code.

The IIU issued a news release on May 2, 2022, advising that it had launched an investigation into the incident.
