Selkirk RCMP are currently investigating the use of counterfeit currency that occurred in the community. Investigation began after receiving a report of a suspect attempting to purchase goods at a business located on Manitoba Avenue using fraudulent currency.

Officers learned that a suspect produced two $100 bank notes in an effort to make a purchase at a local store when the cashier suspected they were counterfeit and called police. The suspect immediately fled the store.

Preliminary police investigation determined that several businesses in Selkirk were targeted and two suspects were caught on surveillance cameras.

Police say that the counterfeit currency was seized and two of the three bills were found with the same serial number. The three bank notes also had a security feature that is found on a different denomination.

RCMP believe other businesses may have been targeted and urge those accepting $100 Canadian bank notes to examine them carefully. For tips on how to spot counterfeit currency, visit bankofcanada.ca.
