The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is investigating the death of an 18-year-old man following an officer-involved shooting in the City of Portage la Prairie, Manitoba.
On May 24, 2023, RCMP reported an incident to the IIU that occurred earlier that day in which police responded to a report of an unknown female banging on a door saying her boyfriend was trying to kill her. According to the notification, at 1:07am that morning, a confrontation with an armed male took place and resulted in two officers unsuccessfully deploying their CEWs and one officer discharging his firearm. Resuscitation efforts were made, however, the male was pronounced deceased.
A team of IIU investigators was immediately deployed to the scene. Since this matter involves a fatality, a request for a civilian monitor will be made to the Manitoba Police Commission.
