Portage la Prairie RCMP are reporting that an 18-year-old female suspect from the community was recently arrested and charged following a foot pursuit that involved numerous officers.

A Portage la Prairie RCMP officer was recently on patrol on Oak Bay in the community, when she observed a female on the street acting erratically and in possession of a crowbar. The officer subsequently exited her patrol vehicle and attempted to speak with the female who then fled the scene on foot.

Police say that the suspect was pursued with additional officers attending to assist. The foot pursuit led the suspect and officers to a property, where the suspect attempted to jump over a fence in an effort to evade capture.

An officer then attempted to physically gain control of the suspect, when the suspect turned and raised the crowbar towards him. A Conducted Energy Weapon was then deployed and the suspect was arrested and taken into police custody without further incident.

RCMP report that the 18-year-old female suspect, from Portage la Prairie, was held in custody overnight and released the following morning for a future court appearance. The suspect will be facing charges of assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
