The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating the death of an adult male following an officer-involved shooting in Sandy Bay First Nation.

On April 20, 2024, the Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) notified the IIU of an incident that occurred at approximately 4pm that same day. According to the notification, MFNPS and RCMP members responded to a call for service at a residence on Ridge Road South, in Sandy Bay First Nation, regarding a report of a male brandishing a weapon and threatening a female. Upon arrival, the male was no longer at the residence. Officers began searching for the male and located him a distance away from the residence. A use of force encounter occurred, resulting in the discharge of a service firearm and the male being shot. The male succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.

A team of IIU investigators was immediately deployed. As this matter involves a fatality, the IIU will request the Manitoba Police Commission appoint a civilian monitor.
