With the assistance of Police Service Dog (PSD) Marook, Winnipegosis RCMP were able to track and successfully rescue an infant from a fleeing male suspect.

Winnipegosis RCMP recently received a report that a male suspect had threatened to use a firearm on residents of a home before fleeing the residence with an infant. It was unknown at the time if the man had access to a firearm.

A short time later, RCMP located the vehicle that the male suspect was traveling in. Officers saw the male leave the vehicle and flee on foot into the bush with the infant. Members noted that the infant was not dressed for the sub-zero temperatures.

RCMP Police Dog Services was subsequently called in, and PSD Marook started a track. After approximately two kilometres through heavily treed area, PSD Marook and his handler located the suspect and the infant.

Police say that the suspect was taken into custody. The infant appeared unharmed, and was handed over to Emergency Medical Services once officers hiked out of the bush. It was later determined the infant was not physically injured.

Officers noted that the male was not in possession of a firearm and that he was known to the residents.

RCMP report the 26-year-old suspect is currently facing charges of flight from a peace officer, criminal negligence causing bodily harm, and uttering threats against a person.
