The City of Steinbach has announced that starting Saturday, May 3, local residents can bring their yard and garden waste to one of three community compost depots setup within Steinbach.

Compost depots are open every Saturday, from 9am to 3pm, and run until October 11, 2025. Locations include Woodlawn School (411 Henry Street), Stonybrook Middle School (77 Lumber Ave.) and Smith Neufeld Jodoin Law Office (Lot 85, Provincial Trunk Hwy 12).

Items to compost include Vegetables and fruit (fresh, cooked, canned), coffee grounds and filters, tea leaves and bags, egg shells, bread, plain rice and pasta, garden waste, weeds without seeds, grass clippings and leaves. The City asks to not compost meat, fish, bones, eggs, dairy products, oily foods, sauces, pet waste, diseased plants, metals, synthetic materials, plastic and petroleum products

Officials note that compost is being accepted year-round at the Steinbach Landfill.
