The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) has concluded its investigation into serious injuries sustained by an adult male during an RCMP arrest in Lake St. Martin First Nation.
On March 21, 2025, the RCMP notified the IIU of an incident that occurred on March 19, at approximately 5pm. According to the notification, RCMP officers from the Gypsumville detachment attended Lake St. Martin First Nation to arrest an individual with an outstanding warrant for domestic violence. Officers located a vehicle in the ditch and saw the male flee on foot from the scene of the collision. He ran into a residence, where a use-of-force encounter occurred, during which RCMP deployed a conducted energy weapon.
The male was taken into custody and transported to the detachment, where he was assessed by emergency medical services. He was transported to Lakeshore General Hospital in Ashern and then transferred to Health Sciences Centre Winnipeg. The male reported being diagnosed with multiple facial fractures.
As this matter concerned injuries during an arrest, the IIU assumed responsibility for this investigation in accordance with Sec. 65(4) of the Police Services Act. IIU investigators were assigned to this investigation. The civilian director designated one subject officer and two witness officers. Investigators also spoke with the affected person.
Following due consideration of all the circumstances, the civilian director will not be authorizing charges. Therefore, the IIU investigation is complete and the matter is now closed.
