The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) has concluded its investigation into the death of an adult male following an officer-involved shooting in Winnipeg.

On November 24, 2024, the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) notified the IIU of an incident. According to the notification, WPS members were at a retail store in the 3600 block of Portage Avenue that same day when, at approximately 5:09pm, officers reported that a fellow officer had been stabbed in the throat and a suspect had been shot. Officers immediately started life-saving measures on the male. The male was transported to Health Sciences Centre Winnipeg, where he was pronounced deceased. The injured officer was transported in stable condition to the hospital, where he was treated for his injuries.

As this matter concerned an officer-involved shooting death during an arrest, the IIU assumed responsibility for this investigation in accordance with Sec. 65(4) of the Police Services Act. IIU investigators were assigned to this investigation. The civilian director designated two subject officers and two witness officers. Six civilian witnesses also provided statements.

Following due consideration of all the circumstances, the civilian director will not be authorizing charges. The IIU investigation is completed and the matter is now closed.
