The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) has concluded its investigation into the circumstances surrounding a serious injury sustained by an adult male involving the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS).

On February 18, 2025, the WPS notified the IIU of an incident in which an adult male sustained a serious injury. According to the notification, on February 17, 2025, at approximately 11:28pm, officers were in a parking lot on Henderson Highway when they saw a vehicle pass at a high rate of speed. Police attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled at a high rate of speed from the area of Henderson Highway and Johnson Avenue. Officers lost sight of the vehicle.

The WPS helicopter (Air1) subsequently located the suspect’s vehicle, which had rear-ended another vehicle and crashed into a light standard on the northwest corner of Chief Peguis Trail and Henderson Highway.

A passenger from the suspect’s vehicle tried to run away but was apprehended by police a short distance from the crash scene. The driver of the suspect’s vehicle was trapped inside and needed to be extricated by the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service. Both people were transported to hospital for treatment. The driver sustained a fractured leg and suffered hypothermia due to the time it took to extricate him from the vehicle.

The affected person had charges pending before the court as a result of this incident, which have now been disposed of.
